How do you define "soundtoys" ?
I think the name "soundtoys" is self explanitory and is open enough for a wide interpretation. i think i will leave it alone.
On a personal level, why do you make this work?
Potluck was made as a way to bring together sound artists from around the world to contribute their work to a space where other people can alter, mix and save their work. both sascha and i believe the power of the internet lay in the openness of people to share their knowledge and skill and we wanted to make a space for this.
What is you project and your work about?
Potluck is a Sound Application and Resource built by Amy and Sascha and Justin Bakse. This first piece is a prototype. Potluck hosts sound libraries made especially for this space by international sound artists. Potluck profiles each artist and showcases their sound libraries in the Potluck Stax. The Stax are sections in the potluck library that we hope to fill with many sound artists. In the Stax, users can listen, alter, and mix beat and effects in the Stax trax. Users can save their mixes for others to enjoy or load mixes by other users. We are curently working on version 2 where users can download the mixes to their hard drives and use them as they like.
How long have you been working in this area?
Since 1995.
Were you an artist/ musician first who got into using computers/the net, or did you respond to the net as a medium in an artistic way?
I was a photographer in 1995, and was asked to design an online magazine www.atlasmagazine.com. After designing atlas, i got seduced by the net.
What/ who has influenced you in your work? (themes, other artists etc)
Nature is my biggest influence. Recently i have concluded that Frei Otto and Osamu Tezuka have been big influences on me. One of my all time favorite artists is James Turrell.
Are there any other artists covering the same field as you?
I think there are many. At the moment i think we are conceptually aligned with Nils Norman, Vito Acconci, and possibly http://www.rtmark.com (although they are much more active than us)
Do you see this work as art?
Sure.
With regard to 'soundtoys' especially, why do you think the audio >visual form is so key to the net?
What defines the aesthetics of new interactive art.?
How important is the visual aspect in the 'new' relationship of the audio visual.?
Does the net promote visual awareness that is unique to it?
How novel do you feel generative music and interactivity is?
Do you think there is a history to audio visual work?
Would you describe yourself as a multimedia artist, a net.artist, programmer, or none of the above?
What software do you use most and why?
Can you recommend three urls to soundtoys?
